First I would like to thank everyone for the expertise here. I am a recent purchaser of Little Snitch and I find that I very much like having awareness of what actually goes on with my internet connection.
I did a search about MDNSResponder here and uncovered a number of posts about it. However they all seem to be on earlier iterations of OSX. I am running 10.9.4. Currently where I live in Quito Ecuador I use a somewhat public wireless hotspot. My concern about MDNSResponder is that it has (right now) 44 connections. After trying to research this, Bonjour seems to be the culprit so I decided that I would change the rules on Little Snitch to disable both incoming and outgoing connections to this service. in spite of this, network traffic to MDNSResponder continues in spite of the rules. I was under the impression that creating a rule pretty much had an instant effect on any given program or processes' access to the net. The rules - block incoming and outgoing- any server, any port- seem to make no difference. Is this a fault of Little Snitch or... something else. Additionally from a security standpoint how concerned should I be that MDNSResponder is attempting and seemingly making these connections- one note here that all are UDP and all are to different ports, not to any outside IP address. Sorry if this is a bit of a neophyte question but any suggestions would be appreciated.
